ISLA MARGARITA, Venezuela.- The Leones del Escogido achieved their third and the Dominican Republic’s eighth Caribbean Series title on Sunday, by beating the Leones del Caracas 7-4.

Escogido returned to the Caribbean classic after an 18-year absence and won five out of its six challenges.

The title was decided in the last game after Puerto Rico beat Mexico by 8-2, which obliged the Dominicans to beat the hosts to prevent a tie breaker against the Puerto Rican team on Monday.

The Indios de Mayagüez from Puerto Rico came second with their 4-2 score, the best result for Puerto Rico since they finished in the same place and the same score in Carolina in 2007.

Puerto Rico has not won the series since 2000.

The Mexican team, Los Naranjeros de Hermosillo finished third with 2-4 and Caracas last with 1-5.

The crown returned to Dominican hands following last year’s victory by the Venezuelan Tigres de Aragua in Mexicali. The Dominican team has won 6 out of the last ten tournaments.

Escogido won its last Caribbean championship in Miami in 1990 and has not played in the series since 1992 when it was held in Hermosillo.

Venezuela, with nothing to play for after being eliminated in the fifth game, made 5 errors in the deciding game, in which it used all its substitute players.

In contrast, the Dominicans went on the offensive from the start in order to ensure the title.

Cabarete.– The annual Cabarete Kiteboarding World Cup will take place from 24-29 June at Cabarete Beach, which features the perfect combination of wind, water and waves in the Dominican Republic.

Known as the latest craze in extreme sports, kiteboarding involves a large parachute-like kite that pulls a surfboard across the water. Kite size varies with wind velocity, and when laid flat they can measure 40 to 66 feet in length. Depending on wind speeds, riders can travel up to 35 mph across waves and jump up to 30 feet in the air.

Because Cabarete’s “Kite Beach” attracts avid kiteboarding enthusiasts and has developed into a unique community that encompasses reputable schools, exceptional instructors and passionate students.

As a result of its ideal kiteboarding conditions, Cabarete draws several highly regarded competitions including the Kiteboarding World Cup and Master of the Ocean. The Kiteboarding World Cup brings together some of the best riders in the world.

“This was the last hurdle that we needed to clear before we could make our title defense,” Guzman said. “Now we’re just waiting on the new date.”

The fight was scheduled for Saturday, May 3 at Meadowbank Sports Centre in Edinburgh, Scotland, but due to Guzman’s visa issues, the fight will now have a new date.

All we need now is for Frank Warren (promoter) of Sports Network to give us the new, rescheduled date,” said Sean Gibbons, matchmaker for Sycuan Ringside Promotions, the company that promotes Guzman. “Guzman cleared up his visa issues and is now ready to go to Scotland to successfully defend his WBO junior lightweight belt.”

Major League Baseball has decided to honor the participation of Dominicans in MLB by changing the name of one of the league’s teams. Although no word on which team will have its name officially changed or when the change will come, MLB director of Press and Communications Dick “Bugsy” Malloy said that three teams are in the lottery to have their names changed. Among the possibilities are the Kansas City Dominicans, the Tampa Bay Dominicans or the Cincinnati Dominicans.

Although there has been opposition to the proposed name changes, especially from baseball diehards, MLB Publicity director Johns Innabundle said it would allow for MLB to extend its base further into Latin America and recognize the tremendous work of Dominicans in baseball. Rollin Daround, VP of the Baseball Preservation Authority, argued that it was not necessary to rename an existing organization and welcomed a Dominican named organization, but only when a new team was created or when a team was relocated.
